Drive-By-Duck and other stories

Drive-by-Duck and Other Stories, by Howard R. Andrew.
Nineteen compelling, "nearly true" tales set in southern Africa during the late 1970s and 1980s comprise a debut work for this promising writer. The book, essentially a memoir dealing with Howard's coming-of-age experiences in Rhodesia/Zimbabwe during and after its war for independence, is a labor of love -- love for the land and its inhabitants: black, white, colonial and indigenous. As an American youth studying veterinary medicine in South Africa, Howard, afflicted with wanderlust, chanced to hitchhike north to Rhodesia on school holiday, whereupon his life was forever transformed. Upon marrying a Rhodesian girl and beginning a veterinary practice in the quaint colonial town of Marondellas, his soul became an irreversible part of the hard, red African clay. Now practising in New Zealand, Howard has experienced that teawakening of midlife, when many of us feel an urge to do an accounting of our lives. Howard is eminently successful in this accounting, and has shared his impressions and experiences in a way that makes this reader, a resident of Zimbabwe in the 1980s, want to see more. His stories, some comedic, others tragic, will evoke fond memories and nostalgia in all who once called southern Africa home.

Definitely the best compilation of short stories I have read
Talk to most people about southern Africa and they will recount images of political unrest and violence. "Drive-By-Duck and other stories" offers the reader a different viewpoint. Human emotions and experiences of everyday life are interwoven in stories that reflect the depth of these nomatter where in the world you live. The only difference is the backdrop of the majesty that is southern Africa. For the reader brought up in southern Africa, the book will evoke many special memories. For the reader who has a curiosity for this part of the world, it will fuel your urge to visit one day. And for anyone who just wants a 'darn' good read, you WON'T be disappointed. If you only buy one book this year, let it be "Drive-By-Duck and other stories"

Educating Minds and Hearts: Social Emotional Learning and the Passage into Adolescence (The Series on Social Emotional Learning)
Published in Paperback by Teachers College Press (01 April, 1999)
Authors: Jonathan Cohen and Howard Gardner
Average review score:

Great book on social emotional learning...
This is a companion to Cohen's other edited book, Caring Classrooms/Intelligent Schools. This book addresses an older group of youngsters in school--those passing into adolescence. The 12 chapters cover the theory of social emotional learning (SEL) in schools. A number of SEL curricula or projects are discussed, such as the Comer/New Haven project, the work from the Northeast Foundation for Children, a psychoanalytically informed educational perspective, the Resolving Conflict Creatively Program (RCCP), and others.

This is not really a "how-to" book, any more than was Cohen's other book. Readers will benefit, however, because he systematically reviews SEL programs, and readers will be eager to pursue specific programs from among those referenced.

I missed not seeing any work from Myrna B. Shure, who is a good cognitive-behavioral SEL practitioner (the "I Can Problem Solve" curriculum). Does her work not involve young adolescents? If not, that is a disappointment.

SEL is important because we all 'swim' in a social environment. When that environment is caring and concerned, when students can make heart-informed choices, they 'swim' better and are said to learn better. We certainly know they are happier and appear more productive.

I know many readers will gain a lot from this work, and the other related books in the SEL field. Good luck!

Excellent, important book for educators interested in SEL.
This timely volume presents the range of ways that teachers can help students develop social-emotional skills and competencies. It is very practical and helpful. On one level, teachers have always done this. On another, new information, stratagies and research findings are presented here. Very helpful to "front line teachers" and I suspect, administrators too. It will also be of interest to parents who want to help thier kids feel better about themselves and more able!

Eleanor Antin

Authors: Howard N. Fox, Eleanor Antin, Lisa E. Bloom, and Los Angeles County Museum of Art
Average review score:

antin is king (sometimes she's a ballarina, too)
If you aren't familiar with the work of Eleanor Antin, this catalog of her recent retrospective is a great introduction. Antin is a performance artist who explores the idea of identity and personal history through her various 'characters' (the king, nurse and ballarina). In assuming these 'roles' and presenting herself in ordinary places, Antin questioned what constituted a work of art and also what constituted an individual person. She also touches on other important issues such as body image, race and gender. The works are presented in the form of photoraphs and descriptive writings and the layout and design of the book are excellent.

Delightful retrospective of a feminist performance artist
I saw the Eleanor Antin show at LACMA and was charmed and won over by the playful, witty, perceptive, and poignant work of this innovative and thoughtful artist. This accompanying catalogue is written by Howard Fox, one of the keenest-eyed curators of contemporary art working today. The book is of a perfect size, beautifully illustrated and printed, and excellently edited. I'm so glad I have this catalogue, so I can remember this amazing show forever.

EMDR and Psychotherapy Integration: Theoretical and Clinical Suggestions with Focus on Traumatic Stress
Published in Hardcover by CRC Press (24 November, 1999)
Author: Howard Lipke
Average review score:

The Thinking Person's Guide to EMDR
Lipke's integrative model of psychotherapy is a very helpful framework from which to make sense of EMDR and of psychotherapy in general. He proposes that therapy is based on a Four Activity Model (FAM): accessing current information, introducing new information, facilitating information processing, and inhibition of information processing. While this framework is invaluable in thinking about EMDR, it also provides a lens through which other therapeutic approaches can be viewed, and helps to suggest why simplistic efforts at therapy (like just giving advice) will be less than helpful.

I use this book in my graduate level EMDR course. It does an excellent job of integrating both theory and research findings into EMDR practice. In addition, Lipke's shares many examples of his use of EMDR with combat veterans; the metaphors and other information he presents to his clients are well-suited to many clients, especially men.

This book will be most useful to intellectual readers who have a strong interest in EMDR practice AND theory. When my students ask what book about EMDR they should recommend to skeptical mental health professionals, this is the one I suggest.

Well researched and documented
This is a somewhat technical exposition of EMDR as well as a more general theory of psychology. It will probably be most helpful to professionals in the field but also offers a lot to interested laypeople.

As for EMDR itself, I haven't tried it but I know several people who have and feel that it has helped them. This book helps to explain why.

Empathy and the Practice of Medicine

Highly Recommended
I am a returning student, non-traditional. I have been in science and research for 6 years, and now I am returning to undergraduate classes in hopes of gaining admission to medical school. I found this book in a used bookstore and have not been able to stop reading it. Excellent essays and ruminations on what empathy is, how it is attained and lost and how it might be taught. Excellent reading of an academic nature directly applicable to any student planning on entering the healthcare field.

The Best Book for Undergraduate and Medical Students
Hello, I am undergraduat student with a goal of becoming a caring physician. While I was working as a volunteer at the University Hospital, my coordinator told me about this book. I wrote to the publisher and requested a copy from them. This was by the far the best book I have read in my college career. The chapters are well written and organized. Chapter 3 in this book was the most remarkable chapter for me. It opened my eyes in many different ways. It sort of helped me become even more mature... A Must Buy for all the pre-medical student and Medical Students.

Empty Nesting: Reinventing Your Marriage When the Kids Leave Home
Published in Paperback by Jossey-Bass (26 November, 2001)
Authors: David H. Arp, Claudia S. Arp, Scott M. Stanley, Howard J. Markman, and Susan L. Blumberg
Average review score:

Make the rest the best!
One word describes this book: OUTSTANDING! Given these two statistics: (1) Every seven seconds, a baby boomer turns age 50, and (2) the divorce rate is up 16 percent for marriages of 30-plus years, this book is a MUST READ for all couples who fall into the empty nest/second half marriage category. Don't let the word "fighting" in the title make you think for a minute that this book is only for couples whose marriages are on shaky ground. It is for ALL couples wanting to build, keep, or return to a great relationship.

This book is the best of the best. It is the best of the book The Second Half of Marriage by David and Claudia Arp in which they identify eight challenges every marriage in the second half faces. And, it is the best of the strategies and techniques of the Prevention and Relationship Enhancement Program (PREP) developed by Stanley, Markman, and Blumberg. Not only do the authors suggest powerful, yet simple, ways couples can upgrade their communication and conflict resolution skills, they also stress the importance of building couple friendship, having fun, becoming empty nest lovers, and keeping the relationship strong.

Do you want the rest to be the best? READ this book!

Just the two of us again
Although we are an empty nest couple, it doesn't seem that way with the pets we inherited from the kids when they moved out. We have 3 cats, 1 dog and an iguana to keep us busy now. I think the kids were easier to raise!

This great book isn't just for couples who have a truly empty nest. Many midlife couples today find that their nests get refilled with boomerang adult kids, aging parents, visits from kids and grandkids, or grandkids on a full time basis.

I liked the section on how to learn about the danger signs of behaviors that can lead couples who have been married for decades to the divorce court. There is also good information on the major issues that midlife couples need to deal with in order to have a strong marriage.
